Texas, Pole Vaulter and Butterflies …

This week many family members and friends gathered in Dallas for a big festive celebration. It was a blast, with good food, drinks and lots of laughing … and of course, Texas BBQ.

Had a bit of time to explore downtown Dallas, specifically the area where JFK was shot.  I found it a bit disappointing that there isn’t much at the shooting site that commemorates the importance of that event.  There’s a 6th floor museum where Oswald fired from but the moments around the immediate shooting site are all to George Dealey, whoever the heck he was.

The main 2 photo ops for tourists are the X’s that mark the spots where Kennedy was hit and the wooden fence on the grassy knoll where many people believe another gunmen shot from.

One last Texas note … I drove by Bush’s new house, a modest-sized chateau, and couldn’t believe how many “Welcome Home George & Laura” signs were up in the neighborhood. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

French story of the week … and this one gives an entirely new meaning to the term “pole vaulter”.

A pole vaulting champion has run stark naked through the streets of France’s capital to highlight his need for sponsorship. Romain Mesnil took his pole with him for the sprint, which took in Paris’s top tourist spots including Montmartre and the Pont des Arts across the River Seine.

In his VIDEO, which has been posted on the internet and uses a black square to cover his modesty, Mesnil runs as though he is about to vault the popular attractions. Reuters reports that the athlete took the usual promotional step after Nike failed to renew his sponsorship deal, despite a silver medal win at the 2007 Athletics World Championships in Osaka. On his website, Mesnil blamed the global economic crisis for the sports company’s decision to stop his backing.

Here’s a video that I got from a friend … makes me want to puke and laugh at the same time.
