corsica, fashion week, shakira, porno & sorcery

I didn’t have a blog entry last week for good reason … I was in Corsica.

Corsican Happy Hour

Corsican Happy Hour

For those of you unfamiliar with this beautiful, naturally wild and relatively undeveloped French island, here’s some info on it: it’s the 4th largest island in the Mediterranean (after Sicily, Sardinia and Cyprus), it’s located just west of Italy and southeast of France; Napoleon was born there; most people speak French, Corsican and/or Italian; there are a ridiculous number of boars on the island and most men are bald.

I spent most of my time on the southeast side, between Porto Vecchio and Bonifacio. Bonifacio, with it’s extraordinary white cliffs overlooking the sea was a particular highlight.

Before heading off to the island, I shot the Veronique Leroy “Pret a Porter” fashion show, part of Paris’ fashion week.

Shows were lower-key this year than in years past but I always find them entertaining from a sociological point of view. I typically enjoy the backstage preparation and the insecurity and falsity oozing from the crowd more than the show itself.

Also, Shakira released a new album and passed through Paris to promote it.

She was very gracious and respectful, nothing like what I expected after seeing her latest video, which I find vulgar (does this mean I’m getting older?)

News from France:
A report commissioned by France’s National Research Agency on AIDS found that two out of every three kids in France has seen a porno film by the age of 11. To read the Time Magazine article about this, CLICK HERE.

News from the US:
JK Rowling’s Harry Potter’s books have sold more than 400 million copies. However, author JK Rowling missed out on a top honor because some US politicians believed she “encouraged witchcraft”, it has been claimed. Matt Latimer, former speech writer for President George W Bush, said that some members of his administration believed her books promoted sorcery. As a result, she was never presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The claims appear in Latimer’s new book called Speechless: Tales of a White House Survivor.
