French Farmers, J-Lo, Mika & Photog of the Year …

More than 10,000 French farmers took over the streets of Paris wreaking a bit of havoc throughout the city for the better part of a day. The farmers drove tractors from Place de la Nation through Place de la Bastille to Place de la Republique and back.

They’re pretty pissed off about the government not helping them with rising costs and dropping prices. It was kind of fun to watch tractors honking their horns and launching firecrackers in front of the Bastille Opera house.

Movie premieres don’t happen in Paris during the month before the Cannes Film Festival so instead, Jennifer Lopez just made an appearance at the Hotel de Crillon overlooking Place de la Concorde. She was in town promoting what must be a ridiculously bad movie called The Back-up Plan (or ‘Plan B’ in French).

Also this week, I photographed a highly entertaining singer/performer named Mika. He was born in Beirut to Lebanese and American parents, but moved to Paris and then London at the age of nine. He’s curiously not too known in the US but he’s HUGE here in France and throughout the rest of the world. His music is really uninteresting but his shows are outrageous.

Camera equipment is heavy. I hate carrying a backpack full of gear while I work. I always try to travel as light as possible. That’s why I have the utmost respect for this photographer that I saw at the French farmer tractor protest this week. He must really have wanted to get out and shoot!
