Monaco Royal Wedding, Hats, Janet & Lanterns…

Just got back from a sweat-filled 4 days in Monaco covering the Royal Wedding of Prince Albert II and his new bride Princess Charlene. The affair was “star”-studded (President Sarkozy, Sergey Bubka (not kidding), Jackie Stewart and Roger Moore to name a few), eloborate and expensive but the ambiance was rather flat and I’d say even a bit sad. You didn’t need to know anything about royals to see that the new princess had a look on her face like she’d just made a big mistake.

The Princess

The talk of the town were media reports that 10 days before the wedding, the Princess had to be stopped by French police at the Nice airport trying to escape back to her native South Africa. When the Princess cried during the ceremony, they didn’t appear to any of us like tears of joy. The best part about the adventure, filled with days of 85 degree temperatures and 85% humidity, is not having to care at all about the royals. To me, it’s like modern day mythology.

The highlight for me was probably hearing the Eagles, who the Prince brought in to do a free concert for all Monegasques (residents of Monaco), perform a moving version of Hotel California.

During the wedding ceremony in the Prince’s Palace, I filled some of my time shooting a favorite photography subject of mine … women wearing ridiculous hats. And oh boy, there were plenty of targets to aim my camera at.

The Hats of the Monaco Royal Wedding

Like I mentioned it was pretty blistering hot so the hats came out in full force. Not many of them seemed to have any functional purpose, like say, blocking the sun. But they did prevent me from being bored in between shooting Louis de Bourbon, Duke of Anjou and say Sophie Countess of Wessex.

Before heading out to the principality, I shot Janet Jackson in concert in Paris. She looked, sounded and moved surprising well for someone the same age as me. I can tell you that she has a large group of diehard fans here in Paris, something I didn’t quite expect.

Here’s something pretty cool from Poland, just in case you haven’t seen it already:

Beautiful pictures! I agree with the sadness. Shame on Charlene! South African women usually know what they want, so I guess the $ outweighed the love…………
